Let's start with some basic patterns. I have chosen the following pattern samples because they are the easiest patterns for a beginner knitter.
Some of the complicated patterns become, if not simple or easy, less intimidating once you have a few easy projects under your belt. However, it is not necessary to stick to the yarn or the needles specified in the pattern, but it is important to get the correct number of stitches per inch in order to have the right size, length and other characteristics of the pattern. Different combinations of knit and purl stitches, along with more advanced techniques, generate fabrics of considerably variable consistency, from gauzy to very dense, from highly stretchy to relatively stiff, from flat to tightly curled, and so on.
The thickness of the yarn may vary along its length; a slub is a much thicker section in which a mass of fibers is incorporated into the yarn. The strength of the spun yarn against breaking is determined by the amount of twist, the length of the fibers and the thickness of the yarn. In weaving, the threads are always straight, running parallel either lengthwise (warp threads) or crosswise (weft threads).
You will have only one new stitch from two. But, that's the essence of knitting.
