Like weaving, knitting is a technique for producing a two-dimensional fabric from a one-dimensional yarn or thread. The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them.

For the first, pass the right needle through the first stitch of your left hand needle. It can be a humbling experience to the perfectionist. In lace knitting, the pattern is formed by making small, stable holes in the fabric, generally with yarn overs.

I didn't know I had done something "wrong" at the time, but got many compliments on the distinctive nature of that sweater. All knitting instructions use basically two stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. There are many designs that your mind can create such as natural scenery, flowers, birds, or aquarium beauty, anything is suitable, in your convenience.

Even if you're a pretty proficient knitter, this isn't the time to learn a new technique or work with a skinny fingering-weight yarn that will take forever to knit up. Not only will this provide a nice social outlet, but your new knitting friends may also be able to help you locate and use new knitting patterns and new ideas for knitting projects.
