Let's start with some basic patterns. The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them.
If you pick a simple pattern, knitting is really easy! If you're an absolute beginner or just feeling a little lack of confidence, knit up some scarves in chunky, beautiful yarn. I knit everything through the back loop, the result a twisted stitch which worked wonderfully with the yarn I was using. If you are knitting with circular needles, you can start making tubular scarf for this cast around 300 stitches, and join them together in a circle.
Once you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. This concept is related to the pattern you have and, if in your pattern it says there are supposed to be , for example, 5 stitches to an inch and you can make only 3, than you should and need to change the size of your knitting needles. Often books give step by step instructions as well as a general knitting overview.
You may also want to consider finding a local knitting group or meeting online others who share your hobby. Good luck with your knitting.
